Day 30 - The first month is over..........

I have to say before I start that I am REALLY CHUFFED today as I have just looked at the statistics for my blog and it was read by over 60 people yesterday. That is a record for me, its usually around the 40 mark. It may not see a lot to some, but for this fledgling blogger I think its pretty good!

Well, a day off  today and a chance to step back from work and start thinking about moving the restaurant forward. I think sometimes to progress, you have to step away from the core of the topic and look at it almost as an outside observer. I havent decided exactly yet, but a couple more conversations should set the ball in motion. Got a couple of close friends to mull over it with and we will go from there.

On to the 'journey'. I started my day with a cup of tea and some home made hummus on 2 small slices of toast. 250 calories.

Lunch was a BIG test for me today. We had gone to do all the things we cant get round to doing on the 13 out of 14 days we work, so it was a pretty full on day and by 4 pm we were really hungry and miles from home. For the 2nd time in 30 days I had to eat out. The first time was easy, but today, the dreaded Chinese buffet! I think I did quite well,....... I went up (for the 1st time)  and came back with some tuna, lettuce, 1/2 an egg, a little tomato and 2 small slices of baguette. I ate that very slowly and patted myself on the back for avoiding all the other temptations, that was until plate 2! I have to say that although I went for the 2nd plate, I did avoid anything that was deep fried. I managed to walk past the spring rolls, crispy duck, pancakes, sesame prawn toasts, anything with pastry, and anything that looked like it may contain calories. What I'm basically saying is that I walked past all the nice stuff!! I did however have a little pile of rice noodles, the same in rice (YES, OKAY, IT WAS FRIED!), some chicken with chilli and some prawns. Cant really divulge the calories as I dont have a clue. Whatever it amounted to, I still know that I have eaten less than 1900 today and if I'd gone 6 weeks ago, I would have eaten 4 huge plates of the bad stuff.

Tonight I have nibbled on a handful of pistachio nuts and had a small glass of wine and so that is todays total daily intake

I am going to attempt something interesting tomorrow, might do a 'healthy barbie' or similar. Will keep you informed and hopefully have some interesting pictures for yuo all as well

Sleep tight and speak to you all tomorrow

Day 29- The day I was described as a 'God amongst women'!

Sunday Lunch day......

A very successful Sunday Lunch today! We were fully booked and had to turn people away. We even had people sitting in our downstairs cafe! My starter of asparagus, Parmesan, Rocket & Serrano Ham with lemon mayonnaise went down very well and it always pleases me when customers try something ' a little different' than the norm as I sometimes get the feeling they would just rather have plain, plain, plain. I was also chuffed that the Pork Loin filled with apricots, sage, rosemary and wrapped in bacon, (expertly prepped by my Saturay night sous chef Gemma), was a big hit too. I think it just outsold the beef this week. Really nice to see customers trying something they're not necessarily familiar with.

I was also chuffed as a couple of friends and Facebook Page members, (https://www.facebook.com/groups/185455448234743/ ), Gemma & Jane, had asked me for a low fat recipe for a non fruit based dessert and I managed to create some low fat/calorie chocolate muffins. If you are interested in the recipe etc, please feel free to join or just have a look at my food page. One of my other members actually described me as a 'God amongst women'! You can see from the title of todays blog that I was rather pleased with that!

On to 'the journey'. Day 29....
Its always a weird eating day for me on a Sunday. Breakfast never really happens as I am stupidly busy cooking the Sunday roast and today was no exception. For those 'diet purists' out there, look away now. I also didnt have lunch today as service went on until about 4.30 pm. I did however snack on 1 roast potato, a bite of Yorkshire pudding and a slice of beef on a little piece of bread! My evening meal was a lazy option again, consisting of 3 slices of toasted ciabatta bread. 2 topped with tuna and tomato with a little balsamic syrup and 1 with low fat cheese and no fat coleslaw. 550 calories.

I have nibbled on a few pistachio nuts tonight and also sipped on a glass of red wine, but to be honest after todays paltry calorie intake, I'm not even counting!

I'm off to bed now as I have a day off tomorrow and Harrison has no school, so with a bit of luck I may get more than 6 hour for once.

Sweet dreams all and speak to you again tomorrow

Day 28- and the 4th weigh in.....

Well today was the 4th weigh in and I am pleased that I dived into the pool at midnight last night and swam for 20 mins! I have lost a rather spiffing 5 lbs this week to take my total weight loss in 4 weeks to 1 stone 4lbs (about 9 kilos). I'm pretty chuffed with that, but I am also aware that this is just the start of my journey and I would be silly to think that this quick weight loss will continue at such a rapid rate.

Breakfast was 'tostado con tomate', (for those of you not familiar with Spanish life, its just grated tomato on toasted stale bread with a little salt and olive oil), and a coffee. Approx 300 calories

I managed to have lunch for the 2nd day running today, although it was just some toasted brown baguette with low fat cheese and no fat coleslaw. Again, approx 300 calories

To really uninspire you, I have to confess that I had exactly the same for my dinner tonight. I know that bread with all 3 of my meals today is not good, but didnt get in from work until late again and really couldn't be arsed to cook. So, all in all a total of 900 calories today....thats 1000 calories under my target. I still need to drink more water and up the exercise, but I'm ready for that.

I wont bore you with pictures of todays food as it was all rather 'something on toast', but I am going to make a concious effort over the next few days to step up the interest.

Sunday lunch in the restaurant tomorrow, (actually is 00.29 as I type this, so its today) and I have decided to 'pimp up' one of the starters. I tried it about 2 years ago and it wasnt ordered by many, but I think I'm gradually turning these traditional Brits round a little in to my way of cooking, so I'm giving it another try. I'm doing Asparagus, Serrano Ham, Parmesan & Rocket salad with a lemon mayonnaise and here's the prototype of the one I made earlier.....

Its not the best picture I've ever taken , but you get the gist. I will try and take a better photo tomorrow if anyone orders one! I'm also very interested to see how the Pork Loin stuffed with apricot, sage and rosemary and wrapped in streaky bacon sells this week, as the last time I made it on a Sunday, we sold out..........

Its late, Jazz Ellington is about to sing on 'The Voice', so I'm off to listen to his amazing talent.

Good night all and we will speak tomorrow

Day 27- Its the 4th weigh in tomorrow......

Today came and went with not much to blog about really. Breakfast was 3scrambled egg on 2 brown toast and an OJ. Approximately 550cals.

Lunch was a rather hearty affair for me. I used up some left over pasta from yesterday and found the cacciatore sauce I had made on Wednesday, mixed them together with a few shavings of Parmesan and munched heartily!A calorie total of approx 600

I managed to avoid picking at chips during tonights service and had a couple of slices of brown toast with tuna on top. Not very exciting, but I was determined not too eat too late tonight.

Sorry its not a more interesting read tonight, but its 1.15 am and I'm tired! Big morning for me tomorrow, its the 4th weigh in. I will keep you all posted via my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/185455448234743/ or on here later on today

Sleep well x

Day 26 - Back from the quack!

Day 26 started with a routine trip to the doctors. About a week before I started my 'journey', I thought it best to get checked out, and this was my 4th visit. I got a bit of a bollocking the first time I went as since moving to Spain I hadn't taken any of the medication I was on in England. (Beta blockers, blood pressure tablets, aspirin etc....) I know it was irresponsible of me, but its not as easy as it sounds moving to Spain and not initially speaking the language enough to explain your situation. Its not an excuse, but first you need to register with a doctor. Simple I hear you all shout. Don't be silly! You have to be 'on the padron' first, which again in itself seems pretty straight forward. NOT. To be on the padron you have to have your 'residencia'. To get your residencia you have to go a special building in a city called Denia and queue up for 2 hours just to get to the front of the queue to be told that you can only apply for an appointment for your residencia on a Friday. Friday, our busiest day of the week. We eventually went back 3 times in total over about 3 months and got our residencia. I'm cutting that very short through fear of boring you all to tears, but it really was a saga. We then moved to Calpe from our original address in a place called Monte Pego and went to register ourselves on the padron so a) we could put Harrison in the local school and b) we could register with a doctor. Simples........NOT. To register at the padron we had to go to a town called Altea and give our address in Calpe. This we did, to be told by the chap on the desk that as we had initially got our residencia in Denia, we had to go back there and change our address with them.!!!! Oh, forgot to mention we had queued there for 2 hours just to be told that. Imagine the frustration. No, seriously, imagine the frustration. Read all this back and just try to understand how difficult, time consuming and frustrating this all was. Guess what........ we drove to the special building in Denia to be told that we could only change our address on a Friday! Now I understand why the have an armed policeman at the door! Suffice to say that we eventually got it all sorted and finally registered with a doctor. You can sympathise with me then when I say that as I was getting the bollocking from my new doctor, I wanted to ram her lecture up her rather oversized bottom!

On to today. My doctor now thinks I am great! NO more lectures, just praise! Teachers pet, Golden bollocks, the dogs gonads, thats me now! In the last 15 days on her scales I have lost 4.5 kilos aka 9.9 pounds, lost 5cm round my waist and my blood pressure has dropped from 144/94 to 135/80. And all this without a single tablet. I am tablet free!

Back to food. Breakfast was two dry fried eggs on brown toast and some OJ. (480 calories)

Lunch was 3 crispbreads with tasteless low fat cheese, (200 calories)

And dinner, see below, was some pasta with sundried tomatoes, basil, Parmesan and a sprinkling of sunflower seeds for a bit of texture. Really enjoyed it and approx 650 calories. Therefore daily total today was approximately 1400

Its an awful picture, sorry!

So the day ends and I'm looking forward to this weeks weigh in on Saturday morning, especially now as I have started swimming properly today. I managed about 30 mins today of fairly constant swimming, I was only occasionally interrupted by Harrison asking me to catch his ball!

Tomorrow's another day and I will speak to you all then. Sleep well peeps.............

Day 25- Off to the quaks in the morning for an update on my progress

Hello again! Well, I've finally come down off my 'Chelsea high' from yesterday, probably as I've realised that half the team is missing for the final due to suspension!

Back to the food.....

Breakfast was muesli. Sorry, I know, boring. 250 calories

Lunch was a mug of asparagus soup, (anyone thinking they're reading yesterdays blog, it is very similar so far!). Nearly forgot, I have to confess to picking at 2 potato wedges!

On to dinner. I made my take on 'chicken cacciatore', basically a hunters stew from Italy I marinated some skinless chicken thighs with red wine, bay leaf, garlic, rosemary, anchovies, salt and pepper for about an hour. (Overnight would habe been better).

Drained the chicken and browned it in a tbsp of olive oil and removed from pan. Then chucked in a diced onion, 2 cloves of crushed garlic and sweated until translucent. In went some of the marinade and when the alcohol had burned away, I added a tin of tomatoes. The chicken went back in and it was cooked for about 45 mins, simmering gently with the lid on. Here it is..........

Made some pasta and cooked up some brocolli et vioila!

Off to bed now as I have an early start for tomorrow. I will let you know the details of my visit to the docs

Nite nite x

Day 24- COME ON CHELSEA! Ooops, this is a food blog!!

Day 24 has come (and nearly gone) and I am typing this early as I will be immersed in Chelsea - Barcelona for the rest of the evening!

Breakfast was a little different this morning. Well, I say a little different, it really was a little! I had a dry fried egg on wholemeal toast, wait for it................................................................. with a spoonful of Heinz beans! I certainly kow how to live on the edge! Approx 250 calories......

Lunch was a mug of the asparagus soup that I cooked for Sunday Lunch. It had cream in it, but I dont think enough in one mug for me to worry about... I can only estimate the calories at approx 150. I have erred on the high side......

I had some very good ideas for dinner from a couple of  friends, Gemma & Jaimie, but as I a) didn't have the ingredients required and b) as I couldn't be bothered to shop for them, I decided upon my own choice........

I started by coating some chicken breast in cayenne pepper, curry powder and lemon juice and dry fried it in a non stick pan

Sorry the picture is a little blurred, but my hands were shaking at the though of it flying down my gob! It was then added to some tomato, spring onion and yoghurt mxied with lemon and coriander

And then shoved it in a toasted pitta!

Total calories (I ate 2!) approx 600 calories.

I'm off now to bite all my finger nails and pray that we can keep Messi and co at bay for 90 more minutes.....

COME ON CHELSEA!

Speak to you all tomorrow....

Day 23

Another pretty non eventful day really. Breakfast was muesli with milk at about 11 am and that did me until about 3pm when I nibbled on 2 crisp breads with home made hummus and coriander. Yum! Calorie intake for breakfast and lunch 500. I also made a beetroot dip type thingy. Not sure how to describe it really.... It was just beetroot (about 300g) with, 50g of stale bread, lemon juice,  a few peanuts ( I wanted to use tahini, but couldnt find it), a little cumin powder, a clove of garlic and salt & pepper. Here's a picture of it and the hummus to give you an idea.....

The hummus is great as a spread for toast etc, so no need for butter or anything else thats fattening! I didn't use tahini as a) its pretty high in calories and b) I couldnt get any! So its simply chickpeas, lemon juice, a little garlic, a little olive oil and coriander. Its really nice! The beetroot 'thing' is an interesting flavour. I think it would go really well in a cheese sandwich or with a goats cheese salad or similar. I had it on toast with a tuna salad! It wouldn't normally be a combination I would put together, but it did the job.....

I have decided that tomorrow I am going to create something with chicken. It will hopefully be quite early in the evening as I will be glued to the TV watching Chelsea-Barcelona later on so I will be with you all again when its over. Enjoy the rest of your evening peeps and speak tomorrow

Ciao for now......

Day 21 & 22- The weigh in and bits and bobs....

So yesterday was 'weigh day'. A bit of an anti climax for me as I neither gained nor lost any weight. I have had lots of encouragement though from many people and I thank you all for that. I also thank the doubters who have relished the fact that I havent lost any weight this week, as they are spurring me on even more! I am sticking to my philosophies and principals this week and am very confident that weight loss will continue. It would take several weeks of stalemate for me to rethink my strategy. Consume less calories, lose weight, simples!

After the weigh in yesterday morning I had a small bowl of muesli, (yes, still the old fashioned way with milk), and a slice of toast with a knifepoint of butter butter spread accross it. I actually think that there was so little butter on it that I was taking more off than putting on! Approx 400 calories....

Lunch was the now familiar, lazy choice of 3 crispbreads with tuna and a few salad leaves. 200 calories

Dinner was a rather late affair (about 11.30) and as I couldnt be bothered to create much at that late hour, I brought home some left over spaghetti from work and had it with the previous nights sausage casserole concoction. 500 calories. total days calories approximately 1100.......

On to today and as always on a Sunday morning I dont really have time for much as I am prepping lunch for the masses, so I settled for 1 slice of wholemeal toast with a dry fried egg. For lunch I desperately wanted some of the asparagus soup I had made for 1 of the Sunday lunch starters, but poured loadsa cream in it before realising that I should have taken some out for myself! Here's what I missed out on.......

I did have a couple of spoonfulls though and it was yumptious. I think I have just invented a word! No, short lived excitement as I have just checked 'urban dictionary' and found it! No need to define its meaning for you! So, lunch didn't happen. Sorry diet experts, go lecture someone else about the virtues of eating '3 square meals a day'.....

Dinner was pathetic if I'm being honest! I didnt have much in so I decided that what I did have was all going to get chucked into a bowl! Not very 'cheffy' I know. In fact I always cringe when I hear a Masterchef (or similar) contestant say something along the same lines! Basically it was about 50g of pasta, 1 egg, some salad leaves, tuna, sunflower seeds and cherry tomatoes with a little sherry vinegar drizzled on top. Zzzzzzzzzz. Not very inspiring I know. Here it is anyway......

Oooooh, naughty me, nearly forgot to tell you all about the grated carrot!

So thats it then. Not much has happened over the last couple of days and the blog must be a little boring for you all at the mo, but I will endeavour to spice it up a little over the next few days.

Watch this space!

Day 20! The day before the 3rd weigh in!

Here we are again, another day, another diet..........

This may be a quick blog as its very late and I need to get to bed......
Breakfast this morning was two wholemeal, seeded toasts adorned sexily with scrambled egg (made with no milk and cooked in the microwave so as not to use butter). A cheeky glass of fresh orange accompanied it, so approximate calories 500.....

Lunch was an open tuna, lettuce and tomato sandwich 200 cals

and dinner (eaten at midnight and therefore not good for the morning weigh in) was a sausage (made with chicken) casserole. Made with a tin of tomatoes, onion , celery, carrot, white beans and chicken stock, the entire batch was 1000 calories. I ate about a quarter of it with a slice of wholemeal toast, so approx 350 calories. Added to todays earlier fodder, a grand total of approximately 1050 calories.

I'm off to have the biggest poo I can to hopefully keep the scales as low as possible in the morning. I will update you all as soon as I have the result.

Sleep well and wish me luck....................

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Day 19- First red meat in 19 days!

Well, I finanly remembered to take my muesli, (spelt correctly tonight), and milk to work this morning! I'm still a little wary of soaking it with a little fresh orange and topping it with yoghurt and honey, so just boring old milk today. Still, it makes a change from egg on toast.... I have made my own muesli so I know whats in it and also so I dont have to eat the stuff that I dont like much in some of the brands. Mine is pretty simple with just oats, all bran and dried fruit. Tastes pretty good even with fat free milk on it! A whopping 300 calories!

For all you diet sticklers out there, you will all be please to know that I actually had lunch today! Nothing major, but none the less, lunch. It comprised of three of those crisp bread thingys, 1 topped with tuna, 1 with Serrano Ham and 1 with low fat cheese a few salad leaves and some cherry toms! Total calories 250.

On to din dins. Decided as there was a nice piece of rib eye left out, that I would try and concoct something interesting, yet low cal. Here it is!

It may not look like much, but I have to say that medium rare rib eye steak on top of griddled ciabatta with a little horseradish and a rocket salad tasted absolutely spiffing! And wait for it.... ONLY 360 calories!!! It also may not look a lot, but its done me fine! I know a lot of you out there will be saying 'yeah right, thats not enough food, I couldnt survive on that'.... Well I am being 100 percent truthful when I say it is. This is coming from a man who could eat 500g of pasta with bacon and cream accompanied by a whole baguette and still be 'hungry'. It is simply a change of eating habits and conditioning the body to do so. Without sounding pretentious or pompous, it really is a case of re-educating the mind into eating smaller portions. I genuinely believe that a very high percentage of people who are massively overweight are the size they are because the brain has been educated wrongly over time. I am not saying that we all need to go to 'diet school' and learn all the calorific values and fat content of everything we eat, (although it would help those of us that are ignorant about it all), but we need to educate the mind that smaller portions ARE sufficient and we dont need plates piled up to the ceiling. An example I would use is a visit to an 'eat all you want Chinese buffet' type place. Maybe I speak for myself here, but I think I'm right in thinking that we all think 'weyhey, I can eat as much as I want, so I will! Do we really want 4 plates of food all piled high with as much food as we can balance? We think we do, but we dont. I would have large wager with you all that most big eaters would feel totally stuffed, bloated and wishing they hadnt eaten as much as they had. Surely one would feel better just eating the amount required, but I really believe that we think we're missing out on something if we haven't 'got our monies worth'.  I used the word 'one'! Dead posh! On that note, it's time for 'Celebrity Juice', so I'm off to piss myself for 30 mins.

Take care peeps, sorry to have verbally vomitted out some feelings about eating tonight, but I feel SOOOOO strongly about it. Sleep tight and speak to you all tomorrow

Day 18 - Messed the meusli up AGAIN!

So day 18 arrived and I was full of intentions of finally getting round to sorting out some meusli for breakfast. Got it all ready and put it by the front door ready to take to work. Arrived home from work to find it all still sitting there! What a ....!

I'm afraid breakfast was therefore a little boring again, and late! About 11.30! Wholemeal toast with a dry fried egg! I must do something different tomorrow. I must remember my muesli. Although it is only 200 calories, I need some variation! Personally, I could probably happily eat it every day, but part of the idea of this journey was to test my creativity etc, which I'm not really doing yet. Having said that, the main goal is the weight loss and that seems to be going pretty well.  As breakfast was so late, lunch didnt really happen again, but I did have my evening meal extremely early for me at about 5pm.

As Chelsea were playing, I didnt want to be cooking and wanted to have eaten it by kick off, so I simply boiled some pasta and mixed through last nights unused veg! Tasted pretty good to be honest. I had 150g of pasta (approx 550 calories) and about 50 calories of veg. Oh, and the tiniest grating of Parmesan just to give it something, (50 cals) Simples!

After footy (about 10pm) I was feeling peckish so I had a spoonful of Lauras beef casserole, which I have to say was bloody lovely and I could have eaten a bucket of it, and a couple of Swedish crispy bready thingys with low fat cheese on. Another 150 calories. And late at night, oooooooooh, naughty! So todays total calorie intake was 1000!

I'm off to write a sign telling me to remember my meusli and put it on my dashboard and to shave my head. Speak to you all tomorrow when I hope to tell you all about my wonderful bowl of muesli!

Take care all and speak to you again tomorrow

Day 17- Still finding it pretty easy so far........

Another day has been and gone and so far so good. Had a few things to do early on at work this morning, so 'breakfast' was quite late (about midday!) It was a simple affair consisting of a slice of seeded wholemeal toast with a dry fried egg. Did the job, filled the hole and just 200 calories. Not the most exciting of breakfasts again, but it does for me. I know I keep saying it, but I really am going to go with the whole muesli thing tomorrow. Not with milk as I suspect most people have it, but soaked in a little orange juice and topped with yoghurt and honey. I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes......

Lunch didnt really happen. By the time we got Harrison home from school it was about 4.30pm and I knew dinner was looming so I had 2 crispbreads with a tiny slice of low fat cheese on each. 150 calories.

On to dinner:

As you can see from above, it was really two seperate dishes. I wouldnt normally put the two together, but I fancied both so what the heck! There were approx 400g of Prawns (500 calories) with a tbsp of Olive oil (120 calories), some garlic and coriander in the one dish and 100g of cous cous (120 cals), 1 aubergine (20 calories), 1 red pepper (50 cals), 1 courgette (50 cals) and 1 spring onion (10 cals). Baring in mind I only used about a 3rd of the veg, total caloreis for dinner approx 800 calories. Added to  my earlier intake, that makes a total of approximateley 1150. Oooops, almost forgot, I am drinking a small glass of red wine as I type this. Shove another 100 cals on! Still WAY below my limit of 1900.... Looking forward to the next weigh in this Saturday, although I cant see the loss being as drastic as the last two. Still, only a pound loss required for the first stone......watch this space!

Got an idea for an interesting dinner for tomorrow. Will let you all know about it then! Until then, ta ta for now, I'm off to watch Eastenders!

It might be late blog tomorrow as Chelsea are playing Barca in the Champions League semi, so wont be blogging till after that!

Later dudes........

Day 16- and a day off work..... My first meal 'out'

Started the day with a small bowl of muesli, mixed with bran flakes and skimmed milk, approx 350 calories. Then went 10 pin bowling!

After an hour or so of bowling we drove in to Moraira, up to the port and had lunch. My first meal out since the journey began! What would I order..........., something healthy, something fattening, something naughty........? I ended up having a tuna salad! I do not know if the tuna had been sat in a tin of sunflower or vegetable oil, but either way it tasted too nice for it to have been in brine! So for the purposes of calorie counting I will have to assume it was the bad stuff! It was a very basic salad which included 1/2 an egg, a tiny bit of grated carrot, 4 olives, 3 slices of cucumber and a small anchovy! I have estimated the calories at around 300, but have to confess to having some sliced baguette with it, approx 350 cals. So all in all, about 650 calories altogether.

Stopped at the supermarket on the way home to stock up on essentials and decided that for dinner I wanted exactly what I had for lunch. How sad am I?!!

So here is my dinner.....

50g of tinned tuna (150 cals)
100g asparagus      (30 cals)
6 cherry tomatoes  (30 cals)
1 1/2 boiled eggs   (120 cals)
1 carrot, grated      (35 cals)
a few salad leaves  (who cares!)
a drizzle of balsamic viegar (10 calories)
and 5 crispbready things (200 calories)
Total calories 575. Added to earlier, a grand total of 1600

Probably the biggest intake of calories so far, but well within my ceiling of 1900

Gonna try fiddling about with muesli in the morning so will let you all know how it goes then.

See ya!

Day 15 Nothing to report!

A very strange eating day today. Coffee for breakfast, too bust prepping Sunday lunch to eat.  I had a mug of mushroom soup in the afternoon to keep me going and then another mug of mushroom soup with 2 small pitta breads just now. Not what the experts would tell me to eat, but somedays its not so simple. Off to the supermarket tomorrow, (I have a day off), so need to stock up on some essentials to continue the journey.

Sorry its a short one today, but very uneventful.

Forgot to say well done my beloved Chelsea. An emphatic 5-1 win over Spurs that puts us in the FA Cup final! Weyhey! Shocking refereeing decision helped us along the way

Nite peeps

Day 14 continued

Well, as I thought, a ridiculously busy night. I havent eaten anything apart from a couple of olives and nuts. Drives me mad when all the experts say you have to eat this time, you musn't eat at that time. I genuinely had no time to eat tonight. We dont all work 9-5. So, I havent eaten tonight and to be honest I'm not particularly hungry anyway! I'm off now, its 1.15 and I've got to wash napkins and hang them out so they are ready by 8.30 in the morning when I return to work for Sunday Lunch!

Oh the 'glamourous' life of a chef!

Nite peeps , hasta manana!

Day 14 The second weigh in!

I'm writing a little of this now and a little later when I return from work as I think its gonna be a late one. We have over 40 booked for a 'Race Night' and some live music afterwards so definately not home at my usual time. I have half of today off, (not going in to work until about 4pm) which I have spent being weighed at the Beauty Box and shopping for work and home. Did I say 'being weighed'? Oh yes, I nearly forgot........ I'VE LOST ANOTHER 6 POUNDS!!! YIPEEEEEEEEEEE! Thats 13 pounds in 2 weeks! Kiss my bad self! Really please with that. Even more pleased than the first weeks loss.

As I didnt have much in, breakfast was a stale peice of baguette (150g), toasted with a little tomato, cured cheese and spring onion. Total calories when washed down with 200ml of skimmed milk 360.

I'm umming and arring as to what to have for lunch? I need something  in my belly to stop me picking at all the lovely food I will be cooking later. Steak, ribs, Chicken etc. It will be a big test to see how far I have come if I dont pick later! I have managed it now for 2 weeks, so I should be ok. I'm signing off for now, but will be blogging again later

Day 13

Friday the 13th and no disasters........ Another uneventful day really.

A pretty basic breakfast of bran flakes and skimmed milk at a total of 250 calories started me off. I keep meaning to do a muesli type thing, but I need to go and shop for it all first. I want to make my own, a) so I know exactly whats in it and b) I can put all the things I like in it! I need to do a little research on how many different ways there are to eat it. I dont just want to cover it in milk. I know it originated in Switzerland and the Swiss soak it in orange juice and then put yoghurt on top! I may have to look into this!

My afternnon snack was wholemeal toast topped with a thin slice of cheese, tomato and spring onion. Its becomming the norm for the afternnon  at the moment and I need to get out of his habit and eat greater variety. Also I will soon need to cut down on my bread intake a little more. Although I have already drastically cut down, I could do with eating less. Total calories 400

On to dinner....

Tonights dinner...... Deconstructed pesto!

150g Pasta (500 cals)

15g Parmesan cheese (60 cals)

10g Sunflower seeds (65 cals), would normally use pine nuts, but far too expensive in Spain

1 tbsp EVOO (120 cals)
Total calories approx 750

Added to todays previous calorie intake of 650 and we have a grand total of 1400!

Off to watch Eastenders now so I will talk to you all again tomorrow and I will have the results of the second weigh in!

Day 12

Had a busy early morning at work, so breakfast was a little late at about 12.30! Just a small bowl of bran flakes and skimmed milk, (approx 350 calories including my coffee). It may sound a little boring, but strangely, I quite like the taste! I never really used to eat cereal, so perhaps that is why they taste so good. Maybe, it could be that they just taste good anyway. Makes a change from something and toast as well.

Got home in the afternoon and felt a little peckish at around 4pm so I had a cold boiled egg and 2 crisp bread thingys. About 180 calories. I have to confess to having a bite of one of Harrisons fish fingers too! A couple of almonds later and I was ready to go back to work.

So back to work and I decided to change the accompaniment to the tuna dish on the set menu from a green bean and tomato salad to an asparagus and Parmesan salad. Boy I live on the edge! Some people think about Kelly Brook or George Clooney, Man Utd or Barcelona, Adele or Ed Sheeran......, me, I think about changing green beans to asparagus! I have to say it was ordered by one discerning client and looked pretty sexy, so I thought I'd share the picture with you. I do realise that it may just be me who thinks this is pretty sexy, but I'll share it with you all anyway!

I'm finding now that I dont automatically grab for surplus food, eg. extra chips or onion rings etc. I occassionally still go to grab a chip, but then think to myself  'did I actually want that chip or am I reaching for it just because its there'. It must be working, I'm changing my eating habits. I feel that was a very poignant sentence for me. I really am changing my eating habits.........

On to tonights dinner......

Prawn, avocado, celery, tomato, baby lettuce and asparagus salad. 150 cals for the prawns, 220 for the avocado and 50 for the asparagus. forget the celery and leaves. I did eat 3 small tortilla wraps with the salad at 140 cals each. So total calories about 850. Added to the rest from today and the end total is about 1400. As always, I look forward to tomorrow!

Nite peeps, until tomorrow. OOOh, nearly forgot, I may have a couple of tips for you tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Jimbo - The Fat Chef - My journey: Day 11. The quack is happy with her patient...: So day 11 has come and gone and I have been to the doctor who has told me that I am a good boy! Very pleased with my weight loss and my bloo...

Day 11. The quack is happy with her patient...

So day 11 has come and gone and I have been to the doctor who has told me that I am a good boy! Very pleased with my weight loss and my blood pressure has come down! I have another appointment in 2 weeks time to check that I am still being a good boy!

On to the important stuff........Food! This morning I had 80g (3 small slices) of wholemeal toast with my coleslaw concoction on top. A massive 300 calories! No coffee or OJ this morning as I wasnt at work, so no more calories until my trip to the beach later! How could you not have a small beer when sat here?

Less than 100 calories for a beer and this view........ worth it methinks

I had a couple of crispbread thingys topped with stupidly thin slices of manchego (no more than 150 cals) this afternoon and then made din dins

I made a minestrone soup with some of the ingredients from last nights grub. In the past I have found that diets can be quite expensive. Whether it is because my food knowledge wasn't as vast as it is now, I'm not sure, but this change of eating habits is ridiculously cheap and I find myself with much less wastage than before. I'm even saving on bin bags!

So here it is. Tonights minestrone soup, which once again has filled the spot.

1 large carrot, 2 celery stalks, 1 large onion (for future reference this is called a sofrito), 1 slice of Serrano ham chopped up, some fava beans (and yes, I had a little glass of chianti with it!), 400g tin of tomatoes, 1 litre of chicken stock and 50g of 'Ditali Listi' pasta (its just little pasta that looks a bit like threading beads). It made loads! I left all my fresh herbs at work, so lacking on that front, but I would have chucked in some fresh oregano and parsley if I'd had it. Total calories approx 600 including the wine!

So all in all todays intake was approximately 1000 calories. Diet?, what diet? Bring on tomorrow...

Day 10, the journey continues.......

Still in a very positive frame of mind on day 10. I havent yet 'hit the wall' and am still enjoying the new regime. I'm off the doctors in the morning to check on my blood pressure. It was 144/93 last week, but the quack wants it lower. If it hasnt gone down she is going to put me on tablets, but I want to get it down myself. I have hardly touched salt in the last few days and am hoping this will be the start of the pressure coming down. I have also been told that I can either diet or take tablets to reduce my cholesterol. I have told them I am dieting, so it should be interesting in a couple of months to see if that has gone down.

On to breakfast..... This morning I feasted upon two boiled eggs and soldiers (with no butter!) The usual wholemeal, seeded bread so including the coffee and the OJ a total of 440 calories. I recently watched a Hugh Fernley Whittingstall programme about breakfast, so I will be trying out a few of his ideas over the next few days. Until then, I will stick with my 'go to' favourites.

As I wasn't particulary hungry at 'lunchtime', I didnt have any! I did however snack on 3 crispbreads topped with  a slice of tomato and very thin slice of Spanish cured cheese on each one a little later on. A total of approx 170 Calories.

Although not a huge Rick Stein fan, (I like his food, I just find him a little pretentious), I watched his journey through Spain last night and one of the dishes he cooked with lentils was the inspiration behind tonights dinner recipe.

Above is the base of the dish, a sofrito of onion, carrot, serrano ham, chicken stock, lentils, tomato and parsley. Below is the chicken, stuffed with diced mushroom and onion.....

And then, the completed dish

It looked nice, tasted nice, filled me with lots of goodness and the whole meal was 530 calories. There is still a lot of the base left so not even 530 cals consumed. Methinks I will use up the rest of the base tomorrow and make some minestrone soup!

So a total calorie intake today of approximately 1200 calories and can you believe I still have people telling me that I'm doing it wrong and I should be doing it this way etc.... All it gives me is more incentive and passion to prove all the doubters wrong! Keep doubting me peeps, watch me prove you all wrong!

Nite foodies and remember I will be updating you with news of tomorrows blood pressure results!

Day 9. Back to normal, but a kebab for dinner.... Read on..

Here we are on Monday, day nine of the journey. Another pretty easy day for me really. I decided this morning that I would have a decent breakfast. I started with a small bowl of bran flakes with fat free milk (approx 250 calories) followed by 2 slices of wholemeal toast topped with a dry fried egg on each, (no oil, approx 300 calories). This was washed down with a coffee and an orange juice. So all in all a pretty hearty breakfast for me, but one that only totalled approx 650 calories. Lunch was an apple as I wasnt that hungry and I had an idea for a 'cheeky kebab' fro my dinner!

A friend of mine and member of my food page, Jaimie, came up with an idea for healthy kebabs so I thought to myself as soon as I saw it that I would put it to good use as soon as we had some lean pork left over from Sundays roast. I was delighted on Sunday when everyone chose lamb and beef!

I shredded the pork and fried it in one tblsp of olive oil with some cumin and cayenne, a little seasoning and weyhey! I used tortilla wraps, quite small ones at 140 calories each and filled them with some fat free yoghurt and lettuce and then the shredded pork. I had forgotten to bring home some chilli sauce and had nothing at home to make some, so went without! I managed to devour 3 wraps at a cost to me of approximately 780 calories. A bit high for what I have been eating, but none the less, still well within my daily target of 1900.

Oooooooooooh, nearly forgot to mention there was a little excercise today! I managed to brave the 19 degree temperature of the pool and have a swim and a fart around for about 30 mins, so a few calories burnt off there. I aim to up the swimming to a proper 30 min session as daily as possible. We will see how I get on over the next few days, weeks, months.......

Nite all, its time to watch Chelsea draw 1 all with Fulham. Sleep well!

Day 7 & 8 and the first weigh in!

So for those of you who dont know (how could you not be keeping up with my Facebook page 'Jimbos Food page 'https://www.facebook.com/groups/185455448234743/202604673186487/), yesterday was my first weekly weigh in. At the start of the journey I weighed a very embarassing and unflattering 20 stone 6 lbs, or 286 lbs if you're from accross the pond, or 131 kilos if you're younger than me! I was weighed yesterday by Heather at the 'Beauty Box' just around the corner from the restaurant and I weighed in at 19 stone 13, or 279 lbs or 127 kilos. So a weight loss in week one of 7 lbs. I'm pleased with the result, although I know that initial weight loss is usually preety quick. The real test will come when I 'plateau'.

Yesterday was a difficult day for eating. I had my morning meal just after the weigh in (egg on toast)and about an hour after eating that I started to feel 'ill'. It was a sort of flu sensation....., aching muscles, lethargy etc and I just didnt want to eat. By midnight I was starving so I had some wholemeal toast with a little avocado spread on it. So probably too much bread and not enough variety and eating far too late at night, but days like these will happen over the course of a year. That is why it is important that this is not a quick fix, but a journey over a long period of time. I did not put on my excess weight over night and I will not lose it over night. There will be highs and lows and times where I will wonder if its all worth it. Then I remember my family... Of course its all worth it. Do my children want to grow up visiting my grave or do they want to grow up sharing their life with their Dad. Does my wife want to be widowed (probably sometimes!), but as I have no life insurance, I doubt it!

I am doing this first and foremost for me, but there are others I must consider. They will be my driving force when times get difficult.

So, on to today. Sunday lunch at the restaurant meant that breakfast was always going to be a boring quick fix as I am too busy to create anything 'interesting'. Yes, I know I could have got out of bed earlier, but to be honest, I couldnt be arsed! Wholemeal seeded toast did the trick. I was a little devil and had a smidgeon of butter as well. I recently read an article on margerine (thank you for the information Kerrigan), that really put me off the stuff for good! A smidgeon of butter once in a while is ok! At least its a natural product... No lunch today, but dinner was a rather splendid roast. I didnt go mad, just 1 cauliflower cheese floret, 3 small pieces of roast potato, lots of carrots and peas, 1 yorkshire pudding (gasp, shock, horror I hear you say) a little mash potato, 3 thin slices of lean rare roast beef and some gravy. Yum yum. It filled me up and now at midnight, I am still not hungry.

I am going to try and get a little sleep tonight as last night was pretty restless so I will talk to you all tomorrow when my creative head is back in focus and I can hopefully capture your imagination with some recipies other than wholemeal toast, wholemeal toast with tomatoes, wholemeal toast with eggs, wholemeal toast with avocado etc!

Nite all, speak soon
I have three nights off now, so although I will be working during the day, I will be able to spend a little time on creating a few more interesting things to eat

Day 6! The first week is nearly over!

It was a bit of a strange eating day today. I didnt actually eat my first meal until about 3.30pm! I know the 'experts' out there will tell me what a bad boy I am for not having 'breakfast, the most important meal of the day', but if I can go without eating breakfast, then why should I have something? Surely this whole excercise is about cutting down on my food intake.......... I know about kick starting metabolism etc, but the bottom line for me is.......  If I burn off more calories than I eat, I will lose weight.

So, back to the important stuff. Todays lunch was a boring affair to those of you following this blog, but as I had only a short time between arriving home from work and going back to work, I opted fopr my 'go to' meal of toasted wholemeal bread topped with tomato and thinly sliced cured cheese. I enjoy it, its quick, its cheap and it does the job! Work has been pretty full on over this last week, so I havent really had the time I would have liked to dedicate making this journey a more 'interesting' one, but I will be endeavouring to create a few more diverse and interesting things to eat.

That brings us to dinner. Again the experts will tell me that 11.30 pm is too late to be eating my evening meal, but they dont run a restaurant. When I can eat at a reasonable hour, I will. When I can't, I will eat when I can. So for the 3rd time this week I had something with an Asian influence..... Don't worry, I am not going to spend the next 51 weeks eating only this type of food, but it has been convenient and calorifically low for me to do so. Tonight's culinary masterpiece was my take on an Aloo Gobi. I used the remainder of the cauliflower from earlier in the week, with some potato, onion tomatoes, spinach, cumin, turmeric, cayenne pepper, ginger and a little water. I served it with some simply boiled basmati rice. It may not have looked that amazing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its just gone 1am, so I'm off now as I will be up early (again) for work. It is my weigh day tomorrow, so be sure to tune in tomorrow for the first weight loss news. See how positive I am, I know I have lost weight! If I haven't, I'm off to the kebab shop after work tomorrow night! (Only jesting).

Sleep well peeps, speak to you all tomorrow.........

Day 5. Not the best of days to be 'dieting', but I triumphed!

It was a difficult day today as I had to take my son to hospital this morning for an eye check and didnt have time to eat before we went. So it was hospital cafe food for breakfast! I maaged to walk past the sausage, egg, bacon, tortilla etc and plumped for the 'tostada con tomate' and a cup of coffee. I can only approximate the calories at about 250 as I am not completely sure of the tomato mixture, but it tasted incredibly bland, so I am assuming just tomato! The bit of baguette it came on was pretty small, so I think I have over estimated the calories, but I'd rather do that then underestimate.

Lunch was pretty similar as I had to grab something very quickly before going back to work so I had my 'turn to when I cant think of anything else meal' of wholemeal seeded toast with tomato and thinly sliced cured Spanish cheese. It filled the gap again and as I have stated before, actually tastes really nice.

We had a pretty busy evening at work and the temptations were everywhere! Extra chips lying around, creamy pasta sauces, Lauras home made ribs etc, but I stood firm! I took home a piece of tuna and had it with some of the no fat coleslaw I made earlier in the week, some salad and some cherry tomatoes with a bit of balsamic. Simples!

Off to watch 'Celebrity Juice ' now, so speak to you all again tomorrow. I notice that no one is actually 'following' my post. Its about time you did!

Day four, the journey continues......

I managed to survive until my evening meal where I feasted upon a delicious curry made for me by my wife! She wasnt too pleased when as she started prepping, I asked her to start weighing all the ingredients. She did though and produced a sweet chicken and veg curry that I had 2 bowls of.

Well another successful day of watching what I eat. I had a different breakkie to my usual fayre that consisted of 'Bran flakes' followed by toast with banana! It made a nice change though.....

The recipies and calorific values of all the food I am eating can be found on my Facebook page 'Jimbos food page' https://www.facebook.com/groups/185455448234743/ Feel free to join my page where you can ask questions, chat with other like minded people or just share your thoughts. Its a bit of a laugh, but its also a serious food page. If you have any suggestions for me as to low calorie recipies I could try, or just share your own experience with weight loss, I'd love to hear from you.

Take care people and we'll talk tomorrow

Its Day 3! This diet so far has been an absolute culinary joy!

So my third day of 'dieting' is over and here I sit, not hungry, not pining for anything and feeling very chuffed with my efforts so far.

I made some pancakes this morning from a recipe given to me by a very nice lady called Julie, but decided to refrigerate them for a rainy day. Instead, I fancied a fried egg (dry fried with NO oil) and bacon (all fat trimmed) on a dry slice of toast. It did the job and kept me going until I got home, whereapon I feasted on a slice of wholemeal toast with some cured Spanish cheese. Again, it did the job and kept me hunger free! Dinner was a slightly more elaborate affair. I decided to use up the carrot, cabbage and asparagus I had left over from earlier in the week and make a Thai broth.

Made a broth with some chicken stock, chillies, ginger, coriander and reduced fat coconut milk and added cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots and asparagus. I'm not sure that you'll find asparagus in many a Thai cook book, but hey, I like it and I'm the one whose eating it!

I managed to make some little spring rolls with some left over veg too. Didn't fry them, just ate them as they were with a little soy sauce dip. Pretty tasty. Oh well, eastenders is on now so I'm off to watch it. Speak to you all again tomorrow

Nite nite Foodies!

Day 2.......

Okay, so here we are, its day 2 and another successfull day methinks. I was a little hungry this mornig as I only had a coffee at about 10am and an apple about an hour later. I did however survive until lunch when I feasted upon a slice of brown, seeded toast topped with grated tomato mixed with olive oil and topped with two thin slices of cured Spanish cheese. I have to say it was pretty good! Not sure that it filled the gap completely, as I drank rather a lot of water afterwards and brought my evening meal a little further forward than I had planned!

I also experimented today by making some coleslaw, but used fat free yoghurt instead of mayo. It makes alot and the calories are really low. The recipe is on my Facebook page 'Jimbos food page'.

Dinner was pasta with a tomato sauce, black olives, french beans, white beans and a little shaved Parmesan. Quite enjoyed that too! I have to confess to washing it all down with a glass of red wine though. So altogether, including the wine, just over 900 calories. Added to the 150 calories from earlier and the apple and coffee, I have so far today amassed a total of 1150 calories. I may have a little something later as I have 750 calories to play with!

I'm going to make this a short post today as I have ridiculous amounts of things to do at home so remember to 'follow' the blog (you'll find the word 'follow' in the top left corner of the blog) and dont forget to click on all those interesting adverts!

Speak soon fellow foodies!

Sunday, April 1, 2012

The first day is nearly over!

Well its 9.30pm and I'm not hungry! I'm normally wondering what I can munch on by now! Its been a pretty easy first day to be honest.

Breakfast was a rather boring affair consisting of a piece of dry toast with 2 scrambled eggs and a cup of tea, but it filled a hole. Although temptation was everywhere today as we were serving Sunday lunch in the restaurant, I managed not to succumb to them. The hardest part was not realising that subconsciously I just grab things like roast potatoes and shove them in my ever eager gob. Caught myself doing it 3 or 4 times today, but didnt actually eat anything! Go me!

I managed to stay relatively hunger free until about 7pm when I had chargrilled chicken, cous cous and asparagus.

Can you believe that before my dinner, I had to sit and watch my wife and son devouring a kebab each! The worst part was that I had gone and got them! Harrison (my son) only ate about half of his and on a 'normal day' I would have reached over and finished it whether hungry or not. Today was a different story though, I simply picked it up and put it in the bin. Very strangely for me it was easier to do than I had thought!

So I have added up all my calories and in total I have consumed a little over 600 today.I'm well chuffed with that. I have a day off work tomorrow so I am going to do a 'proper shop' and get all the things I need to keep me going for a while. I'll keep you all posted as to how I get on tomorrow.

Nite Foodies!
